چکیده

Tidal datums are key components in NOAA’s Vertical Datum transformation project (VDatum). In this paper, we propose a statistical interpolation method, derived from the variational principle, to calculate tidal datums by blending the modeled and the observed tidal datums. Through the implementation of this statistical interpolation method in the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, we conclude that the statistical interpolation method for tidal datums has great advantages over the currently used deterministic interpolation method. The foremost, and inherent, advantage of the statistical interpolation is its capability to integrate data from different sources and with different accuracies without concern for their relative spatial locations. The second advantage is that it provides a spatially varying uncertainty for the entire domain in which data is being integrated. The latter is especially helpful for the decision-making process of where new instruments would be most effectively placed. Lastly, the test case results show that the statistical interpolation reduced the bias, maximum absolute error, mean absolute error, and root mean square error in comparison to the current deterministic approach.

Development and Use of Tide Models in Alaska Supporting VDatum and Hydrographic Surveying

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Ocean Service uses observations, hydrodynamic models and interpolation techniques to develop many of its products and services. We examine how two projects, computation of tidal datums for vertical datum transformation and the estimation of tidal characteristics for hydrographic surveys, are being developed in Alaska and how they may be...

تأثیر تغییرات مکانی بارندگی بر پیش‌بینی هیدروگراف سیلاب در حوضه‌های آبریز کوهستانی

In this study, the influence of spatial heterogeneity of rainfall on flood hydrograph prediction in three mountainous catchments in south west of Iran was studied. Two interpolation techniques including Thiessen polygons method and Inverse Distance Weighting method were applied to compare the rainfall patterns of surrounding rain-gages in hydrograph simulation with rainfall patterns of nearest ...

Quantifying uncertainty in elevation models using kriging

Raster based digital elevation models (DEM) are the basis of some of the most important GIS workflows: hydrologic modeling, site suitability, and cost path analysis. While there are several techniques for generating digital elevation models (DEMs), none of them can produce a true elevation surface. Locally varying measurement error and the inexactness of the interpolation methods contribute to ...

3d Dynamic Terrain Visualization of Island Areas

There are multi-source data in island areas, such as land DEM, bathymetry and sea level data from tidal stations. Different data have different spatial references, especially in vertical datums. To visualize the different data in a system, those data needed to be converted into a same spatial reference. This paper presents a methodology to integrate multi-source data of island areas. To visuali...

Presentation of K Nearest Neighbor Gaussian Interpolation and comparing it with Fuzzy Interpolation in Speech Recognition

Hidden Markov Model is a popular statisical method that is used in continious and discrete speech recognition. The probability density function of observation vectors in each state is estimated with discrete density or continious density modeling. The performance (in correct word recognition rate) of continious density is higher than discrete density HMM, but its computation complexity is very ...
